Two New OnesNew to me anyway. I just got these off ebay, came in today while I was at work. The one on the rest is marked Dr. Grabow DELUXE and stamped 9737. The fitting is slightly damaged, and the stinger is gone, but it sure is pretty. That little baby dublin is a WESTBROOK Adjustomatic. The Adjusto works perfectly.

I really like it too. Bent billiards are my favorite smoke, but I love looking at the Bulldogs. I know I've told this...I have three bent Bulldog filter Grabows put away. I think at least one of them had a square shank. I'll probably have to move out of this house to find them.
Got these last week from Irishlefty. The Omega is a fantastic smoker, it has a a slim vulcanite stem in perfect condition. have yet to try the Ohm Paul and the TR-10 WESTBROOK Triangle Apple. The TR-10 Adjustomatic works perfectly (even though I don't have it perfectly aligned in the photo). Looks to have the original lacquer finish on it.

...and I almost forgot about these (Yeah...that's right, Barry's doin' show'n'tell tonight) I got these from Ed. The orange spade Bulldog is as it was when I got it, perfect condition. The other four apparently weren't good enough to make tampers out of.
I wire brushed them, sanded them and then waxed and polished, along with a good alcohol and salt treatment. Then I rebuild the bit end of the chewed up stems. These are fine looking specimens now.
The Bulldog and the Pot on the rest are WESTBROOKS, the other three are BELVEDERE. I've got a whole new appreciation for the wire carved finish.

Thanks EM. I've also gotten rather fond of the dublin shape ever since I got a couple from Ed. I had always passed them up. Now I find myself looking for them.
This one is small, nice little nose warmer. Enjoying some English Luxury in it right now. Surprisingly smooth smoke from such a small bowl.

Nice work on the stems |
I'm scratching my head wondering whether Barry actually restored those pipes or just did some of his graphics magic on the picture! Surely he is not equally talented in BOTH areas! --RJ--

OK...maybe a little bit.
Got this little gem in the mail today. Early 60s Stingered wire carved STARFIRE, near perfect condition. This is the first Author in my collection. That's right, I'm now referring to it as my collection. Too many pipes to be a rotation. I actually have pipes I haven't smoked yet. You guys are a bad influence on me!

Nice Barry! like the way the Authors feel in the hand. Nice chunky feel.
To many to be a rotation? At what number does it change from rotation to collection?

Well...when I joined the forum, I had 12-14 in my rotation and about 30 all told. I've doubled that number and still got an eye on a few more. You got me started on the 'wire carved variety' Before I got those from you, that finish wasn't even a consideration. Now, I find myself looking for them. That's a good thing for me though. Since RJ doesn't much care for the wire carved, I actually have a chance of collecting some good specimens.

The wire brush finish is may favorite form of rustication on a Grabow. Especially when in good condition and still shows the red and black highlights.I prefer smooth pipes though

May be my favorite finish period. That rustication just looks, well rustic, lol. I don't know if I remember someone smoking a pipe like that on or before a hunting trip, but they always make me think of the perfect hunting pipe.

Wire brush finishWhile we are on the subject of wire brushed finishes I have a question. All of the pipes I have with this finish are like Barrys author and the Starfire bulldog(front) in my picture except for the other pipe in the picture. The other pipe is a Golden Duke. Color is not only different but the rustication is also. It is more course and has some areas that are deeper and larger like it was carved first then wire brushed. Why the difference?

My wire brush finished Viscounts are the same. Look like they were carved first too. Plus a lighter stain, almost a tannish color.

OS, I can answer that one.
First, we only had 2 or 3 people that ever did the wire brush carving. It was a bit dangerous to use the wire "cup brush" with only masking tape on their fingers. Each one would do the carving slightly differently.
Some lines...Golden Duke and Westbrook (I think) were machine carved before the wire brush carving was done. The machine carving made the heavier grooves.
Other lines...Starfire..were only wire brushed...ted

Thanks Ted! I was just looking at the pic Wesley (Fly cruiser) posted and it looks as if a couple of his pips are made like my Golden Duke. I think I like the GD finish more.Maybe it 's the color.

People's color preferences change in time. Remember black & white sedans? Pastels? Turquoise or avocado appliances? Color DUKEs?
Most of us seem to prefer lighter & more natural looking finish to our pipes now. I have a seldom used jet black Peterson. Maybe I will use it someday if I ever attend a formal gathering that permits smoking.

That's true Dave. A lot of the pipes that I refinish I leave unstained although they all eventually turn the same shade of brown when used a lot.Even those I stain will eventually turn brown if used regularly. Black is the only color I hate on pipes unless it is used as a contrast color. Like my orange Color Duke more than my black Commodore!

Yep, you're probably pretty safe on those auctions UNLESS the seller says it is stamped with a shape number and I don;t have that shape -- that's a very, very rare situation these days.
Too many pipes in rotation? Never heard of such a thing! Nearly everything I own is basically in my rotation. The pipes aren't being "displayed", they're just resting . . . --RJ--
