Vintage TV Commercial Question

Someone posted a thread on CPS about vintage tobacco commercials and I posted the following.  The thread got buried so I thought I would post it here and see if anyone might know the answer.  Here it is:

There was a pipe tobacco commercial I remember on tv years ago that had a catchy tune that I can remember well enough to pick out on the piano (not much good here of course) and the words went something like this:

Tastes great, packs right, smokes sweet, can't bite and now (pause) it's back in the pouch.

I might be a word or two off, but does anyone remember what tobacco that was about? I remember seeing that commercial a lot, especially on Saturdays and Sundays during all the sports shows.

I seem to remember that but couldn't answer the question!!

Those words sound familiar to what they said

Update:  I finally got an answer over on CPS, one of the fellows there says it's Sir Walter Raleigh.  That doesn't all of a sudden click in my mind, but he could be right.  He says it started out "Smells grand", rather than "Tastes great", as I had remembered.  I do sort of remember that.  Must have been 40 years ago.

It doesn't click all of a sudden for me either, steverino. But SWR and PA is about the only pipe tobacco I can recall from the olden days.

That musical commercial may be on line at archive.org with the UCSF Library.

Boy, Steve, you sure have one heck of a memory.  Just by chance, I was reading through an old Sir Walter Raleigh Pipe Smokers Club Newsletter this morning and came across this from the Dec 83/Jan 84 issue:

"Mike Landers, Jackson Tenn, said he's been smoking SWR for years and liked the last newsletter.  He wanted to know if ever there was a TV or radio jingle along the lines of:  Smells grand, packs right.  Tastes great, can't bite.

"You've got some memory there, Mike!.  The jingle, which went: 'And fresh...Stays fresh in the pouch,' was begun on radio and grew up with black and white television and then color TV.  You might also remember at that time comedian George Burns, along with a bevy of beautiful women, promoted both the Aromatic and Special Mixture."

Amazing you can remember that far back.  I can't remember my own kids' names most of the time.

Terry, it's crazy, I can remember my Grandparents' phone number from when I was 6 years old (TEmple 3-3263), but if my wife asks me a question the answer to which I'm "supposed" to remember, you think I can?  Forget it!

I do love those old commercials, though.  I think the effect I receive from watching them is similar to what makes pipe smokers pay $300 for a tin of vintage tobacco - oh, the memories.

Steve, you should get a couple of DVD's of Martin Kane, Private Eye.  It's an old TV show (early '50's) about a pipe-smoking PI.  The hook is it was sponsored by US Tobacco, and the commercials are just part of the script.  One of the characters stops into the local tobacconist and learns the virtues of Old Briar, Model, pipe tobaccos, or Sanyo cigarettes. The acting is a little dated, but I like it. I think www.oldies.com had 3 or 4 three episode DVD's at one time.

Huh.  Sounds interesting, will check it out, thanks.

Check out this link.  There are a couple of episodes posted that you can watch.  The site has tons of old movies and TV shows.

SWR would have been my guess -- that is practically the same as their print ads read in the old magazines I have been looking at.  --RJ--
