West Coast BriarOn a DG De Luxe 9715 I got today it's stamped 'West Coast Briar'. All other of my great Dr. pipes are stamped 'Imported'. Does anyone have an explanation for this? Where might this briar hail from? Very puzzling yet intriging!

Like it says Duke,West coast!! May be California Manzanita. Dr.b,Mac and Mike L can probably tell you a lot more. I have a couple of pipes that I suspect are domestic briar, but none with that marking--lucky dog!! I have TWO nice Larks that I would trade!! Even throw in some great tobacco!!

Duke, I have heard rumors of a West Coast Briar DG, but yours is the 1st actual one. It's a rare one.
We've had some discussions here in the DGCF about domestic briar pipes. Kaywoodie had a briar operation in California harvesting Manzanita. They marketed it as Mission Briar, and the pipe as the Monterey.
Apparently, Linkman or the DGPC got some Manzanita and made a few DG pipes from it. I will buy it from you if you decide to sell it. No LARKS or Mixture 79 in the deal, I promise.
Please post some photos of it. I would love to see the stamping, aluminum cleaner, stem joint, and stem emblem.

How about I trade you a Viscount with a chewed through stem for some of that 'GREAT' baccy?Or a Lark for 2 pouch's?

What GREAT baccy do I have that you might want, Duke? I have some Edgeworth pouches that ted picked up for me.
So share photos of the DG DELUXE 9715. If you don't have a camera, you can send it to me and I will photo it. Of course I will return it promptly ... or something that looks a lot like it.

More than rumors! Mike L. knows a fellow that has one and one that I would've like to have obtained, but alas, no dice.
I did finally get a 9733 stamped West Coast Briar, but it's a real mess -- someone (not me) severely distorted the stem with pliers in an attempt to remove it. This damaged the propeller logo on the stem and sort of actually TWISTED the stem a bit, but it's the only WCB I have, so it has to do until a better example comes along.
Mine has WEST COAST BRIAR in block letters on the right side along with the number, a script "Dr. Grabow" over a block letter DE LUXE on the left and the SHIELD emblem on the top of the shank. The usual patent number for the cleaner is on the bottom of the bowl. Is this 9715 marked similarly?
By the way, GREAT ACQUISITION! I quit bidding on multiple pipe aucrions because I was accumulating a barn full of extra non-Grabow pipes that I have no use for. --RJ--

Duke, bite the bullet and go purchase a 15 meg Canon single lens reflex camera, a 100mm f2.8 autofocus macro lens, and a macro ringlight flash. Cost will be about $2140 plus tax & shipping, but I feel it will be worth it. That set up should give us good pictures.

With RNC's WCB GB we now know of 4 of them. Mac's, RNC's, Duke's, & Mike's friend. They're appearing less rare than I thought.
RNC, do you have any photos of yours?
Maybe I'm the only DG collector without a West Coast Briar.

That's a graet idea DB! Since I'm getting rich working at a golf course I'll try to pick one up this weekend!
This is the best I can do for now. Any close-up's are blurry.DG is in cursive,Delux & WCB is in block letter's. Shield on top of shank w/old Linkman mark on stem(white circle w/slash).Any help?

OK, I had some time today to take some quick shots of my 9733 DeLuxe WCB, such as it is. Perhaps they will do until something better can be posted.
It seems as the markings onmy West Coast Briar Dr. Grabow are the same as yours -- and it has the "C" cut, double hole cleaner as I refer to it for a lack of a better description. --RJ--

Those photos made me cringe! What kinda idjit does that to a pipe? Especially one as rare as that!!!

DG expected we would smoke them, wear them out, throw them away, and purchase another. Ted will tell you, DG never expected anyone would collect decades old DG pipes.
If they had foreseen collecting, they might have printed dates on their stuff.

Would you be refering to the fact that it appear's that someone used plier's to remove the stem?
