Who Likes Captain Black?I used to like it out of a Grabow back in the 80's.
Is it good out of a Grabow now or has it changed?

I like the CB Royal but it's hard to find around here. Don't care for the Gold or the White.

I do.
Smoked it in the 80's and cant remember, so can't compare...
I do like the Gold though. Smoked a bowl not too long ago and thought mmmm and remember what it was packed with. The Gold.
Seems pricey though...

I used to smoke the RLP-6. I like it better than the tinned Capt. Black White.

I like all three Captain black blends. The wife likes the smell of royal the best .

I have smoked CB Regular (white), Royal and Cherry. I like Royal the best. Many people throw off on the cherry nearly as emphatically as they do Mixture 79, but I actually like it once in a while.

Speaking of mixture 79 , what's the deal with everyone being down on it?I've never tried it ,but somebody must like it for it to have been around so long.

It's really not as bad as a lot of people make it sound. It does have something of a floral/perfumy aroma initially. I find, however, that this burns off after the first few minutes and the rest of the bowl is like an unremarkable burley. Not bad, just nothing special - to me, of course. I guess it achieved notoriety for being Hugh Hefner's favorite at one time.

Its like the ONE food you sometimes crave but rarely eat.
For me its Ice Cream... seriously one or two ice creams a year period. But when I do eat it I love it... just not an everyday thing

Just placed an order at pipesandcigars.com. I buy most of my tobacco from them.Ordered 4oz. ea. of the Lane 1Q and BCA to see if I like them.Find here lately that I'm smoking more burleys than aromatics, although I still like my Stokkebyes Nougat(bought 16 OZ.) Yesterday went to a local discount tobacco(cigarette) store and bought a tub of SWR and a pouch of Carter hall.Liking the CH more with each bowl. Also bought a pouch of Mixture 79-yechh,blechk,puke,choke. One bowl was all it took-actually did'nt finish that bowl!! Worse than the crap I bought at Walgreens a while back!!!!! I now have about 2 lbs of unsmokeable crap!! While up north,I was running low so I went to another discount place and STUPIDLY bought a bag of "Super Value" Vanilla---as my signature says---!! Finally the only other pipe smoker on the job told me about a Tinder Box in Rockford. Their North Sea tobacco is actually Stokkebyes Nougat!! Bought a pound!! Thinking about sending that vanilla back to the distributer and telling them to stick it where the sun dont shine!! Anybody ever try any of the "Scottys Blends" from pipesandcigars? I also ordered some of their Scottys Butternut Burley.

You will be craving that Mixture 79 in another year or two, Oz.
Takes about that long.

Ozark...you have had some bad luck with selecting tobaccos to smoke but luckily for you its cheap enough to throw in the USA. When I buy tobacco and it taste like shit I still smoke it because of the cost we have to pay for it. Thats life I suppose

well, I'm not sure if it's bad luck or senility! Maybe a combination of the two!! Tobacco here is fairly cheap, for the bulk and the old general store varieties. The tub of Sir Walter I bought was under $19.00,16 Oz of the Stokkebyes was $22.00 (0nline).Why so expensive down under? Taxes?

There is nothing sneaky about Mixture 79.
After a year or more you will catch yourself wondering, "It couldn't have been that bad." And you will want to try it again.

Yes its taxes forced upon us. Tobacco in Australia for a 50g pouch or tin costs between 26 - 40 dollars AUD and this will be going up in the near future to an all time high by another 20%.

GIG....What about tobacco sent to you through the postal service? Is that taxed? If so, based on what? I think the Forum could keep you in tobacco, if we could "get it in". Is there a tax on "scrap tobacco"?. Think we could send you enough "scrap" to "cover" you for a week or two. I have
Burley leaves that will hide a "miriad" of sins. ..ted....

SIR DUKE, by the way, the "beech" tree-ette was full of worms. Not suitable for pipes.
But would you like a "small" burley tobacco stalk?. It's already frosted here, but I got one for you. My neighbors crop didn't grow (DRY), so he just plowed it under. I saved the top 2 feet of one plant.
Not a great example, but adequate. Probably smoke really good.
I have a box, thanks to you and the "THOMAS" dublin...Great....gReat...grEat....pipe......ted

For America's sake don't send him any Mixture 79. Australia is still one of our allies.

12oz or les can be sent by international first class mail
It doesnt go through customs so I dont see how they could tax it
It is about as fast as priority mail

Captain BlackI have tried Captain Black - White label.
When I bought my first corn cob pipe and some tobacco from the tobacconist, they recommended their number one selling "house" blend, IQ-140. I really liked it to begin with then grew bored with it. I decided one day to try the drug store pouches so I picked up a 1.5oz pouch of Captain Black white. Much to my surprise it was almost identical to the house blend IQ-140 that I previously smoked. Come to find out, IQ-140 is actually a Lane Limited bulk of 1Q renamed. No wonder they were so much alike.
I keep some around, both the Captain Black white and the 1Q(IQ-140). I don't smoke them everyday, but when I want something different from my other blends, they are quite nice. Not an everyday smoke for me though since I have found much better.
Here is a quick pic of what I am currently working on. I wish I knew who makes them. I think they're probably renamed Lane Limited blends like the 1Q mentioned.

*EDIT*
I forgot to include this for anyone interested. I found this link to a free sample pack of tobaccos from Altadis USA. I put my request in about a week or so ago. I am very curious as to what they send me, if anything at all. Maybe someone else here might be interested. http://www.pipeshowonline.com/p7.aspx

Lane's RLP-6 is close to CB White. But a little better.

I tried Captain Black when I got started in a cob pipe. Oddly enough that was the only tobacco I was able to smoke with out so many relights. It wasn't all that bad.
My childhood memory of Captain Black is that of a weird old neighbor who looked like Captain Kangaroo. He and his wife used to let in our cat and we would let it out and we would know it was he and his wife letting it in because he smoked Captain Black, or rather my dad knew this as to I remember him saying something about the guy and adding, "He also smokes that awful Captain Black".

I guess I will jump in on this discussion. I like Captain Black white. Tried Royal, but didn't like it any more than the white. I also tried the cherry, but was disappointed in that as I usually am with all cherries I try.
I haven't asked my local shop about RLP-6 that DRB like so well, but plan to. Actually, DRB caused me to try Captain Black again, as I tried it long ago and went on to other things and forgot about it. After I tried it again, it became one of my favorites. Sometimes you just float around trying different things, then eventually drift back and realize something you once tried and passed over is better than anything you have tried since!
Not Mixture 79, though. Unlike OS, I DID smoke the whole thing of it. Sort of like our Austrailian friend (but being Scottish and a bit frugal), once I bought it I was determined to smoke it all. I don't so that anymore. I DO NOT THROW IT AWAY, but dump what I don't like in a big can I have and mix it in with remnants of who knows what and bits of leftover favorites that wasn't enough to fill a bowl when I ran out, and believe it or not, it provides for an interesting and enjoyable smoke that NONE of the individual things did.
I never cared for MacBaren tobaccos I tried, but boy, I tried some of McClellands stuff and loved everything I have tried from them! A bit pricey and not available locally, but their stuff is a real treat to be enjoyed every now and then. --RJ--
