wtt two BIG pipesRJ and I swapped some of his "barn pipes" for some C&D tobacco. He sent two HUGE black sandblast pipes (among many others) that have been smoked very little. VPS. Both bowls will take my thumb. They are just too big for my taste.....about the same size of the Grabow "Big Pipe".
One is stamped "ERIKSON" Italy. The other has no stamping at all. Apple and Dublin.
Would like to swap for some tobacco that you don't like.
Somebody that likes big pipes will really like these.....ted

Good move TED! Those two pipes were what was holding up my shipment. They were nice -- the pick of the litter -- and I had put them in THAT special place and then couldn't recall where that special place was, as usual.
I got both of those from the same source, so figure the fellow must have liked big pipes and that type in particular. It was interesting that one was marked and the other wasn't, yet it looked as though they could have been made by the same maker. The only thing they had working against them was THEY WEREN'T GRABOWS. Geez, I HAVE TO DRAW THE LINE SOMEWHERE!
I think they will make excellent smokers for someone that likes to load their pipe once a day and smoke ALL DAY. I think they are equallly suited to someone with a small ego that would like to enhance it, or someone with a large ego that would like everyone to know it. --RJ--

Hmmm - I wonder which of those I fit into? DON'T ANSWER THAT!
Ted, I don't know if I've got anything you would want, but I'd be tickled to give it a try. I'm thinking about giving away my Blackwoods Flake and St. James Flake, as neither of those blends has ever clicked for me. I think I've got a good bit of both, if they're attractive at all to you. May have some more stuff too.

Somehow I figured you might be interested in them. Had nothing to do with ego, though -- I think you just mentioned one time that you liked larger pipes.
I don't know if they are quite along the lines of Dunhill Magnums, but they are larger than a Dr. Grabow Big Pipe and larger than anything else I had. --RJ--

Geez, look what happens when I go away for a couple of days. I love Big Pipes, Grabow or otherwise. Would have loved a chance to at least look at them. What the he**, maybe I'll have better luck next time (If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all).
BTW, Mac, I think I fit into your third category.

Sounds interesting, RJ. It's no problem for me that they don't match up with the Dunhills, since I've never laid hands on a Dunhill in my life nor, as far as I know, seen one in the "flesh". Maybe I did at a pipe show and didn't know what I was looking at.
I think it is interesting to observe the effect a large bore pipe has on tobacco flavor. Since there would be more tobacco surface area exposed to flame, it stands to reason that the larger surface area would provide a more intense flavor "per puff", if you will. I've found this doesn't always work to my advantage in practice, though. Sometimes it's great, sometimes just harsh, depending on the tobacco. It's fun to see what will happen with the different blends.

Alright Steve....load it up. I'll send the 2 pipes to you tomorrow. If you don't like them, send them on to Terry, but remember,he has a dublin..Big Pipe that's the size of the one I'm sending.
I sent RJ an e-mail telling him that his "barn pipes" cleaned up really well. Got a Starfire smooth #49S that came out wonderfully. Already smoked 2 bowls. No ghosts, just good. I'll work on some others tomorrow.
Hope you enjoy these. They'll hold a "day-full".

Quess it's just me but I could never get a really large bore pipe to burn right!! I like to stay under 7/8",with a little cake that is perfect for me. The Grabow large billiards are the perfect size IMHO.

Same here, a Grabow big Pot is almost too big, but I manage to suffer through one now and again.

Steve, the pipes hit the long, dusty trail this afternoon. Also sent a bit of my favorite tobacco. Try that on...Not enough to fill either pipe, but...
Since you were on "The Dome" today, really hope you got down before the electrical storms, otherwise your wife might have to send the tobacco. Seriously, hope you missed it...ted

When you get the pipes, let me know if you want to get rid of one of them. Like Ted said, I already have a Big Pipe Dublin, so I'm most interested in the apple.

We had some thunder rattling around us but fortunately not in the immediate area. Just a little drizzle. And fog. Boy, was there fog.

I MAY have a few pipes still in the barn somewhere, but you'll probably just find some old furniture and a lot of old railroad books if you raid the barn now -- shipped everything I could find out to you and Ed. Oh yea, Ed your package was mailed out yesterday. --RJ--

GBD stamped "virgin"...Haven't smoked it yet. The bit, inside, cleaned up nicely. The smoke hole was so full that I had to "chuck" a finishing nail at the point and use the head to open up a "starting place". It's clean now and is one of my favorite shapes. I never much liked the clear lucite stems...always look dirty, but will make an exception in this ones case.
Got your 3 pipes in the mail to you today.
Let us know what you get from RJ's "barn collection" regards...ted

Thought maybe that was a GBD. I think they call the clear stems "persplex" or some such.
I'll post pics of the pipes Mac is sending. I am curious about the pipe he wants me to work on !

Steve, We'll get around to the tobacco....
Are the pipes big enough for you? The Apple has a defect inside the bowl that might cause it to burn out eventually. Couldn't tell how hard or soft it was around the defect.
Hope you enjoy them......ted

Yes - the pipes came today. They are pretty doggone large! I noticed the defect you are talking about in the apple. Maybe I could make up some pipe mud and fill it. Wonder if Bondo would work? At any rate, thanks for sending them ted, I'll get them tried out here pretty soon and let you know how they smoke. That will indeed be interesting!

OS, what is JB Weld, exactly? I don't remember ever seeing it on a shelf anywhere. Where do you normally buy it?

I'll let OS explain what it is, but it comes in two tubes and has to be mixed. It's available in any auto parts or hardware store and you'll find it somewhere in WalMart and other stors -- maybe in the automotive section.
I don't know if it actually has any metal in it, but it'll stick nearly anything together, including stuff you didn't want to stick together. At least, unlike superglue, it's slow to harden, so you have time to get things unstuck. --RJ--
|
ozark southpaw
|
Steve,I believe JB is considered an epoxy. Like Mac says it can be used on just about anything! It is heat resistant to 600 degrees. Remember the hole in the bowl pipe? I used JB in the bowl after I filled the hole with a wood filler, then put a couple of thin layers of pipe mud over the JB. Have never noticed any bad tastes or smells from the pipe although I did not smoke it a lot. Since I have a couple of Authors in rotation I put that one on the shelf with the dust collectors! There are two versions of JB,regular and the Quick which sets up in about 5 minutes. I wish it where available in black but as far as I know it's all gray.

I wonder if one could add carbon black or some other coloring agent to it without destroying the properties of the JB Weld? --RJ--

I sent an email to JB Weld asking just that. They said it cannot be colored with out changing the properties. I have done it. It still worked, but probably not within their specs. Also, to get black requires so much colorant that the mixture is diluted to the point it drastically extends the set time.

OH, Steve you can get JB Weld at most auto parts stores. It has probably been used to repair a million radiators. Probably get it at Home Depot,Lowes etc. also.
