Yello-Bole, BUHLAHHCKK!

I bought a Yellow-Bole Bulldog made of Brylon the other day, biggest mistake of my life! Awful, hot smoking, bad tasting pipe!
I'll stick to Grabows, they are 100% better!

Never tried one one ,but I don't doubt they are hot smoking. I picked one up a while back, since I did not want to keep it thought I'd clean it up and put on Ebay. It was like buffing a rock!! That stuff is HARD! It did shine up real nice and I sold it to a guy in Spain!!

I remember when BRYLON was introduced by S.M. Frank. Hadn't been with Sparta Pipes (Grabow) but a year or so. Grabow had tried to overtake SMF for years as the industries number 1.

I think Paul Fish(President in those days) bought one somewhere. The management at Grabow KNEW we had won when we saw, felt, and pre-smoked BRYLON. Hot, Heavy, and Ugly.

One of my first pipes was a Yellow-Bole Chequer and it still smokes great  Very Happy  What possessed you  Twisted Evil  to buy a Brylon made pipe  Question

I should have went with a briar one but this one looked nice.
Nice dark Bulldog. Well, you know what they say, "You can't judge a book by it's cover" .

I bought a Medico Brylon Prince and had a similar experience.

I bought the pipe because I loved the shape,but it was unsmokeable.
Gig

Kind of hard to resist a good looking pipe whatever it's made of I suppose, you give it the benefit of the doubt but we learn from our mistakes Smile
Sir Duke

GIG nailed it. They could easily make the perfect shape. Ya buy it then as ted said, hot and heavy. ...

I hated mine but NEARLY kept it for the shape.

Itsw the fruitcake of pipes.

I have quite a few older yello boles, I am particularly fond of the old "shank Logo" pipes with the circle inlaid in the wood on the shank, but any of the old 4 digit shape are usually good smokers.

But the brylon? Oh yeah thems some nasty pipes there. It's hard to belive they are still making them.
ted

Brylon took most all the labor costs out of making a pipe. Grabow had 70 to 120  different operations on each pipe. Almost all these were done "by hand".

Brylon was moulded, probably sanded to remove the mould marks, polished, and was ready for the stem. Even the stem (if I remember correctly) had a rubber o-ring on the tenon, so the "fit" wasn't that critical. The stem wasn't finished very well either. Very inexpensive to make.

The claim was that it was made from a combination of BRIAR and NYLON. Thus the name BRYLON. We never saw any residue of wood in any we experimented on.
Sir Duke

I've seen them made... or at least finished.
They are put in a sort of giant tumbler to remove the seems.

I would have love to be in the Grabow lab looking for the Briar in Brylon:

* Put pipe in Jar
* Insert Termites
* Watch termites Starve to death

Yellowbole

One of my favorites is a Yellowbole Carburetor,not for the way it smokes-I have never smoked it-but because of it's grain. I love birds eye and this little pipe has more than any pipe I own
GrabowGuy

I would suppose some of the Briar Yello's and Medico's to be
just as good as some Grabow's.
I just made the stupid mistake of getting a Brylon!

I have 5-6 medico filter pipes in my rotation.They smoke just fine.
