Here are a couple examples of what appear to be a common malady of these plastic cleaners. --RJ--

| I have a Deluxe with that plastic stinger like the one in the picture above. Smokes really well. Light brown, with the same light band. Stinger seems to be made of some kind of polystyrene. Excellent smoker and looks very well. Large size. |

Dr Bridges, that is one heck of a collection you have there. My Linkmans smoke great. Was Old London a Linkman's? Irish Lefty says yes, but I don't know. Smokes great.
Do you happen to know when they quit making Linkmans? Was it when the company was sold to LHT? I notice the old Linkmans fetch a handsome price on Ebay.
Best, Pete |

Intro, thanks for admiring my modest collexn.
Yes, Linkman's of Chicago produced OLDE LONDON pipes. These were generally VPS (vulcanite push stem) tenon type, with a metal insert filter.
Linkman originated DG very early in the 1930s. 1944 DG Pipe Co. began in Chicago. Advertisements claimed DG pipes were fashioned by Linkman. Linkman still claimed the HOLLYCOURT.
1952 Linkman retired as president of M. Linkman & Co. DGPC sold to HL&T, although DG continued to be produced in Chicago until the end of 1953, when the move was complete to Sparta, SC. |

Yes, but now I can't remember how. I do remember some difficulty and using bent paperclips, a small screw and I think even a drill bit. If I remember right, ended up a small jewelers flat bladed screwdriver, driven into the plastic, and then "unscrewing" the small shaft finally worked best. --RJ-- |

| Thanks, Dr Bridges. The changes in company ownership must account for some of the changes in the pipes themselves. I notice that my older Grabows tend to smoke better (Deluxe, for example, better than Omega) that may be just the individual pipes themselves, and their history under previous owners, but I wonder if you or other forum members have found the same thing? |

None of the shapes used by DG in Chicago match exactly the shapes used by DG in Sparta. Despite HLT moving the manufacturing equipment from Chicago to Sparta.
I cannot determine whether Chicago DG pipes smoke better than Sparta DG pipes. Certainly the briar is older, and the fittings are different. Craftsmanship in the 1940s was different from the 1970s.
The ajustomatic used on the Sparta DG pipes is superior to Linkman's screw threads with integral cleaner. I like the current DG filter pipes. Others users don't.
I'm happy we have a choice.
