Dr.B...
Absolutely Grabow shapes. Lane must have "held back" some "stuff" when they sold to Jim Burns....Can't get a good look at the bulldog, but the bent looks to be "
A" quality...full grain, no flaws?......Wonder how many they have?.....ted

ted, I hoped you might recognize the boxes, although I'm sure these came long after you left.
These are the Esquire SWR btw, appears to be natural variegated stain.
The #83 has 3 tiny fills. #37 has none I can see. The bowls are carbonized. I cannot detect pre-smoking. |

Dr.B.....Two color finish, as we have discussed, darker stain applied, and then a tinted matt lacquer applied.
The boxes are not familiar, although Greene Printing in Lexington or High Point, NC
had the "cutting dies" for the Grabow boxes. Could be that Lane used them rather than the $1000 or so to make a new die. Printing is easy, cutting to spec's is tough.
The #83 with small fills, and the #37L clean makes perfect sense to me. In inventory there would have been a BUNCH....BUNCH....fewer good qualitiy stummels for the #83 than for the #37L. Looks as if these were made to be "top of the line" pipes.....ted |

I'm no expert, but I think these boxes are the clay coated you've talked about. The ends are folded and tucked. They're not the 2-piece top & bottom I've seen used for earlier DG pipes. |

Anyway, guys, if you're looking for some non-filter DG pipes, these appear to be a good buy.
They came out of Austin, Texas (800) 962-5003 BR Internet
The #83 was $24.95
The #37 was $26.95
Shipping was $7.95. I also ordered nearly 4lbs. of tobacco. |

The Lane SWR pipes arrived today. They are vps, non-filter, non-cleaner. Made in Sparta DG factory, probably between 2000-2006. |
Very interesting! Now this reminds me of a box and pipe that has been a mystery to me. It was supposedly a Dr. Grabow pipe made/marked for Tom Dunn's "smoking contest." I never could figure out if it was properly identified, as little about the pipe looked like a familiar Dr. Grabow. The stem emblem looked like it was on TOP for one thing. The sort of bevelled bowl top for another. But the box . . . the BOX which heretofore struck no cord with me, looks much like the one you pictured for your LANE pipes. Hmm.
Maybe the boxes are just generic pipe boxes? --RJ--

Certainly not generic. They are made for the Finest Imported Briar pipes. |

That was probably the pipe box under Lane Ltd. Mine didn't come with a pretty blue flannel sock though. Just tissue paper.
You didn't win that Dunn Smoking Contest pipe, did you? |

No, I sure didn't. I can't remember the details at this late date, but I think I suspected it wasn't a Dr. Grabow and successfully procrastinated until the auction end slipped by. I can't remember if I chunked a token early bid at it or not. Long story, short, I didn't get it and have never seen or heard of another one. I suspect it came from around the 2000 era.
I missed a "MOBIL OILS" Dr. Grabow the same way. Back then, even if I bid, I thought that I should pay more than about $5.00 for a Grabow, so I often got outbid.
I have read a lot of Tom Dunn's THE PIPE SMOKERS EPHEMERIS magazines, but never have read about any Tom Dunn pipe smoking contest or special pipe made for it. Of course, I never had every single issue of that publication. --RJ--
