I didn't know about the different size Omegers either. I looked at mine on the way out this morning. I have three carved ones and a smooth. The carved ones are all the same size and the smooth one is a bit larger, though not much. Unfortunately, none of them have a shape number on them.
I do remember seeing one or two on ebay that looked slightly different from others I had seen.

Whenever you see something slightly different, Steverino, you are obligated to bid on it. That is the DG Collector's Code. The only excuse is if you don't see it. That's why I'm not watching eBay right now. |

You know I feel so stupid, ted. I was looking at some pipes tonite, and found I have 2 sizes of DG Omegas in my collection. Never noticed the difference before tonite. One must be a #47, because neither is as small as the #67.
I sure would love to find a #67 Omega! Love them little buggers! |

I only have #37's I believe. The only one I smoke is the one DRB gifted to me with the modified bit. I never liked the OMEGAs much until I smoked DRB's modified model.
Shape number stamping STILL PUZZLES ME. Some lines NEVER (as far as I know, anyway) got it, some did, but not always. Of course, I had reached the conclusion that the RJR special offer pipes didn't "need" it because the orders for pipes were filled from marked bins. That theory doesn't hold for the SAVOYs, the DUKE lines, or REGALs -- none of which I have ever found or heard of a shape number stamped on, accidentally or otherwise. It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has found/does find one. --RJ-- |

Mac, I cannot tell you when the "shape numbers" stamping started, and can only speculate as to when they stopped, but ONLY Eldorado, Commodore, Viscount, Starfire, an occasional Golden Duke, and a many few (yes I said it right) RJR coupon pipes were stamped with numbers.
I think it ended in about 1984, and speculate that it started in 1964....b e s t I c a n do......ted |

Thanks for that info. It is still something that puzzles me.
I had quit picking up new Westbrooks, Belvederes, Sculpturas and Berwyks because I never found one stamped with a shape number and that is the main area of my collection. Same with the GOLDEN DUKES. If someone finds one shape number stamped, I hope they will share it with us on this forum!
Here is one of those oddities I find. An odd VISCOUNT, which I would assume is a fairly late model because in is a FILTER pipe rather than a threaded joint pipe with a cleaner. It is oddly stamped with only "Dr. Grabow" on the left side, and a large VISCOUNT on the right side. Here's the kicker -- ALSO ON THE RIGHT SIDE IS A LARGE "74" NUMBER STAMP.
This pipe's stain, finish, construction and the vinyl bag it came in all reminded me of the pipes from IP&A. Maybe it was made during the latter part of Lane's control, but the shape number just baffles me. --RJ--

| Mac, Me too, cause it is certainly a #74. Till Lane took over there would never have been that stamping on a(or never been a paper filtered)) Viscount. I'm astounded. Never saw that.....ted |

Hopefully, this 1992 price list will be readable. It doesn't even show a VISCOUNT, but by this date, the only screw stem non-filter pipe left is the REGAL. The price list circa about 1988 I have still had the VISCOUNT and a couple of others as a screw stem.
Somewhere I think I have a brochure/catlog that shows the VISCOUNT as a filter pipe, but as these things are seldom, if ever, dated, I am not for certain when that was.
Regardless, having this shape number stamping on this pipe just sort of blows what little I actually "know" out of the water! --RJ--

An inventory stamped VISCOUNT, but with a tampon filter?
I would guess that the VISCOUNT briar was shaped & stamped in the earlier days, and the tampon filter stem was fitted later after DG was out of stock ajustomatic fittings. But I've been told that stamping was generally one of the final steps in the production line, so the idea that a pipe would be stamped while unfinished, and sit in a storage area for years, seems unlikely.
Just as unlikely is that one of the stampers searched and located the old discontinued inventory stamp just to stamp this VISCOUNT.
Wish we could persuade Rick or Max to participate in the DGCF. Hmmm? Any Tarheel volunteers?
