When ever I sit down that dog is in my lap. Can't get away from her!! She's there now. |
Seems like I recall you had one of yourself on this Forum quite a while back -- with your dog as you said. Am I imagining things? --RJ-- |
I got to thinking...I do remember seeing a guy with a dog on his lap when I was doing some searching for "Dr.Grabow", here's the pic
Is this you Ed? |
That's the picI was refering to. Ed does look like the Rockwell character - doesn't he?

After reading about Barry burning out his wife's food processor while trying to use it as a burley processor, I purchased a new blender/processor to maintain domestic tranquility.
I first used the processor (chopper) attachment. It didn't reduce the leaf into small enough pieces, so I switched to using the blender. Worked well, but don't overload it. And use the lid. I had a burley fountain in the kitchen for a few minutes. Thank goodness the lady of the house was not in the house. |

Here's an update on my ted's rum flavored burley. It's been sitting in a tin since the weekend, still quite moist. I let some dry out overnight and smoked it this morning before leaving for the office.
It seems to have darkened in color, the barn smell has lessened. The taste is sweet, kind of a cross between CH and PA but better. I just smoked a small amount in a small filtered duke. Still too moist.
I did a second bowl in another small duke. This time I mixed it 50/50 with the raw reds. This added a little punch to the smoke, still sweeet, still good. I dumped the entire tin of the flavored (about 5-6oz. into an open plastic tray to air and dry a bit more before I tin it again. This is getting better with time.
I'm thinking of flavoring three more very small amounts, about 2 oz. each with pure vanilla extract, amaretto liqueur, and canadian whiskey. That will leave me with about 6 oz. of the raw burley, which I still have separated, tips and reds in one bag, lugs in another.
This sure has been some fun ted....can I go ahead and put in an order for next year? _________________ BWThomas |

I just got off the phone with an old friend of mine in Rockdale and it came up in conversation that a relative of his down there is growing his own tobacco! Their soil is sandier, but I never thought about actually being able to grow tobacco in it. I asked him why that fellow was growing tobacco and he said that he got tired of the high prices of tobacco. He ought to be good at growing it as he was a heck of a pot farmer until his family got busted for it.
Anyway, I guess I will have to find out what type of tobacco he is growing. He rolls his own cigarettes, but maybe it is suitable for the pipe. --RJ-- |

| Since he is in a sandier area, I wonder if he could get perique to grow. It'd be a lot of aggravation to process though, I guess. |

RJ, remember, I promised you some seed next spring. Should grow in Texas. You'll probably need to add some 10-10-10 fertile-dust to the soil.
Be careful though. Our tobacco patches are known to grow "weed"s. Might really "put a grin" on ya'. Guess thats why we have so many helicopters around harvest time....ted |

Barry, Guess we just have to hope that Alan Southers....the grower...has a good year and wants to plant it again. He planted pumpkins there for the last two years. Be tough to smoke "punkin'". He should. He sells to Santa Fe tobacco in New Mexico. If he grows again, my "tithe" may be a bit more next year. I did not anticipate the response that these few hands of burley brought or I would have (and could have) gotten a bunch more.
One thing you probably realize.....flavoring with vanilla extract is a bit more complicated. My suggestion is to put the extract in a tiny open container and place the container with....not on.....a small amount of burley. The extract is so potent that I recommend not putting it directly on the tobacco. Let the tobacco absorb the flavor. It will...For what its worth....ted |

I'd like to try a baccy patch here but think our season is to short. Most grow Potato's, & Alfalfa around here.Plus it would have to survive at least1-2 night's below freezing in the middle of development. If it likes dry and hot in the daytime maybe.....

Duke, according to what I have read, tobacco can be grown in all 50 states!! There are varieties that have a shorter growing time.Check out this place,it's where I got my seed. Scroll down the page to find the tobacco seed lnk.

Forgot something! The trick with tobacco is to start it indoors a few weeks before last frost, gives you a head start!!
