I am going to have to be a little busier, too! Just found out the other day that Yahoo/Geocities is discontinuing their FREE web site hosting sometime in October so I will be forced to move to another free website host, or fork over at least $4.95 a month for about what I have now if I stay.
Not a really big shock and I have been contemplating for some time, reworking my website in a major way. The bulk of what I have up I started YEARS ago, and the rest I have done the old fashioned way of writing in HTML and "stealing" code when I like an effect or something that I liked and thought I could use. The Dr. Grabow page is a wealth of information, but it's become a rambling, lengthy mess. Unfortunately, I usually just had time to throw something else on there, correct the glitches I created, and then I wouldn't get back to it for months.
Does anyone have any suggestions as far as the best web hosting outfit to go with as far as price and bandwidth, storage, etc.? Of course, staying with Yahoo/Geocities would be the simplest as far as search engines and changing the web address with everyone, but I'd be a fool to pay twice the price for half as much when there is a better deal out there, too.
Also, I am open to suggestions for a web page writing program. As I mentioned, the existing webpage is pretty much homespun. A faster, easier and more professional looking approach is badly needed and openly welcome. --RJ-- |

| RJ, I"ve been wanting to go back to school and become a web page mechanic, and may yet do so, but I know that ain't helpin you now. What about this - have you considered reformatting your information into blog form? There are bunches of free blog sites ( www.blogger.com, www.wordpress.com, etc.) and some include photo hosting. I don't know that this would be the ideal way for you to go, but it could be a possibility if you get backed into a corner. |

Well, Steve, if you do that you can become my webmaster! When it comes to the Dr. Grabow website, which IS a labor of love, I am like Kris Kristofferson. He never intended to SING his songs or to be a singing star -- he was first and foremost a song WRITER and couldn't get anyone to sing his songs. That's the way I am. I never intended really to start a website or maintain one, it's just that I was disappointed there was really NOTHING out there and NO ONE doing anything along those lines, so I thought I would go ahead and jump in. That, and I thought it might all lead me to people who could help me with my research and it certainly did that!
I have to concede my ignorance here, but other than having heard of "blogs", I don;t know the forst thing about them. Staying current with new trends and fads and advances in technology (remember my cell phone, which DID NOT work in the mountains?) just isn't my strong suite. I was sure glad when Tom Martin happened along, because he motivated me considerably, AND STARTED THIS FORUM -- something that I had NO idea about, let alone how to get one started. I think this Forum is the greatest thing besides sliced bread and digital pictures!
BUT I CAN BE MOTIVATED if it is the means to and end. Your advice and suggestions are have been great counsel to me and are always appreciated. There's nothing more that I hate then the wasted efforts to reinvent the wheel when someone else can help me bypass that and jump immediately to what I need. I take no joy in rediscovering the already discovered . . . --RJ-- |

RJ, I would love to help you with this, but it will take the better part of a year to complete the courses I want to take at the community college, so I imagine you will want to do something before then.
And as I implied before, I don't know that the blog concept is necessarily what you want - an "actual" web page is probably more ideal for presenting this kind of info.
Let me give you a few blogs I am familiar with for you to look at. In fact, the first one has a link to your page! Anyway, you might be able to tell from these whether you think this would work for you. The first one is relatively simple, the others are somewhat more sophisticated. Some good reading in them, too. Oh, and Neill's blog, the second one down, is slow to load sometimes.

I guess the biggest plusses for the blog format is that they are free and relatively easy to develop. |

Thanks again Steve! Lots of good info that I will have to check out.
Don't get me wrong. I don't mind doing the webpage at all. I just don't have alot of available time to devote to it and I know that someone else could do it better -- if anything, I am just a bit intimidated and maybe a bit ashamed that it may come off as being amateurish. --RJ-- |

R.J., Trease recommends www.wordpress.org. She says its a little better than www.wordpress.com. They charge for the hosting, but she thinks it's a somewhat better way to go. Her web page is at:

Well, just to allay that fear, I think your web page looks great. I really like the graphics you used for the banner and I hope you can preserve that wherever you go. |

I hadn't visited your site in quite a while but thanks to this thread I just spent an interesting hour on your web page. You may think it is a 'rambling mess' but damn man, you have done a terrific job and I don't think it is at all difficult to follow or to find information.
In fact, I would like to update my e-bay listing pages on the DG pipes to refer people to your site for more information if you approve. |

I'm not much of a hoarder or a proprietary type -- I DEFINITELY APPROVE!!! Several folks already do that, both some that have asked and others who haven't. By golly, for me it's about spread'n the word and promoting the Dr. Grabow brand. Notoriety is fine, I suppose, by compliments like the one I got from you are the best "pay" I could ever get. Thanks!!! (I AM vain enough to watermark my pictures and stuff when I get around to it, but that way, when someone "steals" a photo like I do, then they have to work a bit to remove the "ID"! Actually, I always hope that people do the same thing to their photos and stuff so when I use them I can give them credit, and it saves me the time of adding credits to them). --RJ--
