I've drawn up some plans for building a pipe rack that could be scaled up or back for whatever size you would want, but haven't been able to figure out an easy way to make the rounded depressions that the bowls sit in. I guess I'll just use a router and a core box bit and be real careful, but if anybody knows a better way, thanks in advance.

Share those plans Steve, if you don't mind. I'm going to have parts run on a CNC router. It does a real sweet job of making those smooth depressions.

Oh, okay, I see what you were talking about in the PM. Well, my problem is that I need to build a prototype before I can produce an "as built" drawing. I always tend to refine things as I build them (typical engineer) because I'm not that good at getting it "right" the first time (typical engineer). What I'm thinking of is a rack that will work either sitting on a table or set in place in a wall cabinet. That way, say I've got a rack of Regals in the wall cabinet and I decide I want to smoke through those for a while. I could just lift or slide that rack out of the cabinet and set it on the table for use, then return it later when I'm ready for something else. It'll probably take me a while to get it done since I'm one of those guys who's blessed with constant motivation and energy - NOT! |

There are two versions of those Decatur racks, and what I believe are the older ones have a narrower base and I like a bit better. The other ones look nicer, but are hard to get the pipes in and out of without twisting and turning them and knocking two or three other pipes off the rack.
Since my racks are bascially my rotation, I handle the pipes a lot. I have seriously considered carefully adding a "notch" to the drilled holes to make them cutouts, in effect, IF I can do a neat enough job (which means that it can't look like everything else I work on, which is always functional, but would win no awards for beauty or craftsmanship).
Ideally, I would have a cabinet with glass doors built around these racks. The pipes get handled enough that they don't get too dusty, but the racks do pick up dust over a period of time. Plus, when any of ya'll (like OS) come to visit, I could easily lock them up! --RJ-- |

Note to self, "Be sure and increase security detail if Ed and Barry come to visit at same time and alert said detail to watch for diversionary tactics being employed. Buy more blank tapes for secuity cameras and install emergency lighting in case of power failure. Also alert wife in case I am not home when they show up. Second thought, have security detail watch wife as she may sell ALL pipes at severe discount. If I am home, have security detail watch me lest I get distracted lusting over nekked lady pipe Ed will no doubt be flashing about . . ."
