Well, it was a rainy day today, so I did some work on the website. I could go into great detail about what I am doing and the various stumbling blocks, but there's no need. I don't quite like what I have up yet, but it will suffice. But let's just say I used a free web building site, but I didn't like the fact that I could not actually edit the pages myself, b ut I have found a work around to that.
Tonight I worked on the Cleaner info, updating the info a bit and adding some photos to illustrate things. I'm not nearly finished with it and I have some cleaning up and fixing up to do yet, but my focus right now is just to get the info up there. I have to get TED's briar info back up SOON as well.
Anyway, here's the link to what I was specifically working on this evening:
http://drgrabow-pipe-info.com/Cleaners09.htm
Take a gander and let me know what you think. There are additional variations in those old cleaners, but I am hoping the info provided will be of some help. --RJ-- |

Good stuff RJ, very good stuff. I know this is a lot of work but I'm sure glad you're doing it.
What is surprising to me is the concept of a "nicotine trap". I wonder why, that long ago, they were concerned about trapping nicotine? I thought that sort of thing started with the 1964 surgeon general's report. Most of the experienced pipe smokers I read seem to enjoy the "kick". |

I think the "nicotine trap" maybe a little misleading, but what I think they mean is the smoking residue moisture that sometimes finds it's way up the stem and into the mouth, usually a pretty bitter experience. I think those drops of bitterness one experiences when that happens is generally -- or was at the time, anyway -- attributed to "nicotine". I guess it sounds good to have a "nicotine trap"! --RJ-- |

| Probably right. I was thinking too that it might have something to do with throat irritation, etc. (i.e., as a reason to have a nicotine trap) but what you said makes more sense. |

You'll notice you played a significant part in that information, as that 1938 Grabow ad was supplied by you -- still the earliest ad that I have a copy of, though I now know ads appeared in the Santa Fe railroad employees magazines as early as 1933! --RJ--
