| Lots of great Grabows on eBay the last couple of days. In particular, "aragwa ( 3883) 100%" has some very nice NOS pieces on there! Too many for any one man to buy, really. I threw a couple of starter bids in, but other than a number stamped #84 Eldorado, probably won't pursue any of them very aggressively. Unfortunately for the seller, just bad timing for me to afford all the Eldorados. --RJ-- |

Well, I couldn't hang with the "big boys" on the Eldorado #84 auction! I hate throwing in early bids, but I had too as I was going to be at work when the auctions ended. As you can see, even if I had won it it would have been for a considerably higher price as one bidder incremented the bid up a buck or two at a time. Another bidder who hadn't bid at all came in and wiped us all out. THAT'S the way I'd rather do it!

If someone on this Forum won it, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Looks like it will be a nice one! I know the #50 Eldorado I got from that seller is. --RJ-- |

RJ, it was me, sorry about that. Actually I didn't bid much more than it went for, one more bid and I'da probably lost it. I was like you, I had to put in a bid and go to work, so couldn't "defend myself" later on. Also won the unsmoked Eldorado 65. I don't mind paying a little bit for these pipes as they really do seem to smoke as well as anything I've got. I promise I'll let the next one lay.
I'll say one thing, Ray (aragwa) is a heck of a nice guy. (Of course, he is from NC.) I've bought a couple of other (estate) pipes from him and they've always been top notch, kind of like OS's and Irish's. It's really gratifying to know that there are still people who are craftsmen enough to take the time and care necessary to refurb an old pipe so it can be enjoyed some more. |

Congrats on the acquisition Steve, that is a nice looking pipe. I'm laying off ebay this month (it's killing me) but I'll be back after the 1st of November. (a promise I made and kept with the wife.... I keep promises, but I also live by the letter of the rule) They sure have been a lot of nice pipes offered up on ebay lately! I'm looking forard to picking up a few.
Steve, did you get my PM about the Kaywoodie? _________________ BWThomas |

No apology necessary, Steve! You're a good friend and there is only friendly competition here as far as I am concerned. I knew you like the #84 shape in particular and I am glad you are the one that got it! I've got a lot of the Sparta shapes and was only going after a few of these mostly Eldorados (I won a #50 and a #12) because they ARE shape number stamped and seemed to be EXCELLENT NOS examples. I couldn't afford to bid on ALL of them anyway, but I would have liked to! I may actually "replace" some of the pipes I have that aren't shape number stamped and sell them.

You got it for the next increment above what I had bid, but I don't think I hurt you too bad as someone else had incremented it up almost to that point anyway.

It took a bit of willpower, but I managed to NOT bid on that one, primarily because I do have a shape numbered STARFIRE in that shape and FOUR others in that shape already! That Eldorado sure was pretty, though!

Barry, got the PM and just sent a reply.
Yeah RJ, I won an 84L Eldorado some while back that is finished just like that 65, so they'll look good together. I have a pot in that finish too, so if I can find a billiard and a dog and a dublin now, and maybe a bent, that'll be a good little set. Of course, I don't dare hope to find all those unsmoked. |

The seller lists this BUCKO as a Linkman product, but I think he may just be trying to collect the dots and made a jump to a conclusion not supported by actual facts:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI....&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123
Regardless, the name "Bucko" is interesting and as Sparta used it later on, I wonder what the connection is and who actually made this obviously earlier looking product.
Other interesting listings include Dr. Grabow BOLD REBAL and VAN BOY pipes. I can figure the latter as a misreading of VAN ROY, but I am really stumped trying to figure out how they come up with BOLD REBAL which sounds more like an island in the Pacific. Doesn't seem to be a misreading of either GOLDEN DUKE or REGAL . . . --RJ-- |

Or like something that attacks cotton crops.
