BW..I think we could probably wrangle a tour. I'll just need to know your schedule in advance and have time to call Rick Wooten with tears in my voice about the poor fellow that missed the tour.
I can give you some better directions from Wytheville VA when the time comes.

The country ham, biscuits and gravy at Brown's Restaurant are fantastic. Can't tell you about the grits, though. Even though I was born and raised in East Tennessee, I wouldn't eat grits on a dare.

I'm the grits man -- they were great! So was the livermash -- which I had no idea what it was and TED more or less indicated that it was indescribable. I thought that it meant it was delicious beyond decription -- which it was good, but later TED was looking at me and shaking his head and muttered something about he couldn't believe I actually ate it. Lots of country ham!!!
By the way TED -- net weight gain for trip was ONE POUND. I thought I would gain at LEAST ten pounds . . . --RJ-- |

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, didn't know what country ham and grits were. Married a girl from NC, where we lived and raised our kids for ten years. Been away for 14 years now, get back as often as we can, and I do my best to get my fill. Got a hankerin' for some BBQ too, both eastern and western style.
Oh, and Terry, you've never had grits made with real cream, have you? You might change your tune! OMG, I'm getting hungry!

There is a sound historical and nutritional explanation for grits. It transcends preferences or esthetics. In the south, our ancestors prepared grits for survival. Corn meal mush would have been simpler, but then they would have suffered from pellagra.
Do they make red eye gravy? |

Joy and I took RJ to Shatley Springs for dinner one night. They only do 1 menu and it's family style, all you can eat. Country Ham, Chicken, and about 8 vege's.
RJ passed on the red eye gravy. That's ALL he passed on though....ted |

I've made a few comments on RJ's photo's.
He did a wonderful job, considering all the directions his arms were going. I don't know how he listened as well as he did. Terry and Steve understand. Even though we were in the "slow" group, it moved too quickly.
My comments are only to add a name or explane a bit more.....ted |

I just may take you up on that Steve. I got the go ahead from the wife...she's willing to make a trip anytime I'm ready. So I figure that once were able to set a date for Sparta, we'll also make our plans for the trip east from Sparta to Pinehurst to see her sister, and you are along that route, we'll take the scenic 64.
