In 1967/8 i had a desk in a 15 X 15 office with Ed Darr, Bob Nichols, Juanita Sanders. Mr. Nichols had no sense of humor at all. Juanita and I did.

Some "shaggy" looking "scrapper" came in through the front door and asked Ed ..."Would you like the flagpole painted". Ed said "Yes, How much". $400 was agreed on.

Within 10 minutes the painter had 2 ropes tied into loops, and had his bucket on a hook on his belt.  Within 10 more minutes he was done..

Juanita and I had a great laugh. $400 for 20 minutes work..... Bob Nichols wasn't impressed at Ed's embarassment and out laughter... "Hell, I'da done it for $400".
I'll let this go... ted

I'd paint a flag pole for $400.00 and put stripes on it!

Kind of like my Dad when he bought a 40-acre farm when I was in high school and I lived on it and work it during the summer while out of school. He had a friend - Don Crawford - who was a sports writer for the Columbus, Ohio, Dispatch and one day told me "Mr. Crawford is going to bring you some chickens to add to your flock!"

Sure enough one day along came Mr. Crawford in his station wagon with three crates of the prettiest chickens I had ever seen. We unloaded them in the run off the chicken house and Mr. Crawford went on down the road.

The next morning I found them all in the trees in the apple orchard. Grabbed them one by one and stuffed them in a gunny sack and returned them to the chicken coop and run.

The next morning they were back in the trees again. They could get out of anything and didn't take kindly to being grabbed and bagged.

Turned out Mr. Crawford had been fighting chickens and apparently the law was getting close so he told Dad he had some "Banties" for the farm and unloaded his fighting stock on me.

They were pretty, but tough little birds and would fight each other at the drop of a hat if another one got within 5 yards of them.

My Dad would never admit that he had been had by Mr. Crawford. When he wasn't around, they slowly died off from single doses of lead poisoning from an old .22 rifle we kept in the barn to put down sick sheep, etc.

Dad never asked me where those chickens went ... I simply would have told him they went on to the great "Cock Pit in the Sky" if he had asked, but he never did!
