A few weeks ago I bought a Grand Duke 69 off the shelf of one of our Walgreens.  They always have 2 or 3 Grabows on the shelf, usually a Savoy or a little bitty bowl Grand Duke or two.  The ones I've seen aren't Vulcanite and the bent stems are durn near straight, very little bend at all.

Everytime I see a "Senior", I'll snatch it up.  The 69 I got is a superb smoker...perfectly drilled draft, straight center and an exact 5/32.  Very nice, to my eye anyway, pretty Grandy carving.  I looked back there today when I went in for some meds and they restocked with a Grand Duke 70, so, naturally, I bought it.  Same story...a great example of the Spartan craft.  I've been smoking my Grandy 83 today but had to set it aside for some SWR in this new 70.  The first few bowls are rough till the carbon lining burns out, but it smokes beautifully.  ABS, but no big whoop to me.

I spend a lot of time looking for those estate Grabows just like most of y'all, but do yourself a favor and pick up a new one sometime.  You'll be glad you did!

+2  - Support new production at Sparta.  I wipe a new pipe down with PGA, run a couple wet cleaners through, use a Q-tip to remove most of the carbon coat... Two bowls of CH and it's ready for full service :=)

Good on you! I wish ABC would do a story on Sparta, SM Frank and MM for their Made in America series. I love my new DGs, KWs and MMs!!

I'll have to check out our Walgreens and see if they stock any. All I've seen around here are the basic MM maples and cobs.

You have to be kidding! There's no ad revenue to be gained from doing television on any smoking product since tobacco advertising is banned. Don't think you will ever see ABC touch the subject ...

I have a small Dr. G. my son bought me last Father's Day. It's of course one of my favorite pipes, great for flakes.  It's nothing fancy but a very solid quality pipe.

Checked out one of our local Walgreens and sure enough there were three Grand Dukes, two smooth and one rusticated.

Told the wife one of them would look mighty nice under the Christmas tree, I'll have to wait and see.
