I know that Holmes liked a dark, shag, stoved, VA.
Supposedly according to McClelland, he kept it
in a sock hung on a nail in his mantlepeice.

| I recently, after about 40 years, picked up some Prince Albert again and fell in love with it. Since I write a column on estate pipes for The Pipe Collector - North American Society of Pipe Collectors - I am working on a future article on Dr. Grabow and the Prince. For background I picked four Dr. Grabows - a Linkman/Dr. Grabow from 1937, a '57 Savoy saddlebit billiard, a circa '65 Starfire shell-finished quarter-bent, and a more recent Alpha Kappa - that I found in some old pipes I had set aside for possible refurbishing. I, of course, refinished all four and have been smoking them with PA for over a month and thoroughly enjoying the combination just as I once did back in the 1960s. Thanks to you guys and the new Dr. Grabow web pages I have a lot of material to work from so maybe can generate an interesting article. By the way, the Starfire has turned out to be my favorite of the bunch but maybe it has something to do with my preference for thick-bowled quarter-bents. Glad to have signed into your forum. Thanks for all your info ... Dave Whitney |

Welcome aboard, Dave. I try never to miss your column in The Pipe Collector; I like to think I'm more of a pipe smoker than a collector, and your column is more in keeping with my attitude towards pipe-smoking.

Yes, welcome to the forum, Dave. I'm looking forward to reading your article.
I think everyone here in the forum has at some time or another found simple pleasure with over the counter blends in over the counter pipes.
I hope you continue to visit and post here. |

| Dave...Never read your articles. Hope I get the chance. I know a bit about two decades of Grabow , and one decade of Mastercraft. Questions always get my feeble brain to work. If I can help, just ask......Welcome.....I live in Crystal River...for now..ted |

Dave, I have enjoyed your articles in the Pipe Collector! My suscription was gifted to me by a gent who bought one of my tampers-and I need to renew!! It surprised me(pleasantly!)to see articles about the cheaper grades of pipes! I was expecting it would be all Dunhill ETC. Thanks!! Ed.
