The Karl Erik pipe that Brother Dave gifted me has probably the largest bowl of anything I've ever owned. Not the widest, but the deepest. A bag of PA will yield only about 3 smokes. That said...

A year or two ago David Bridges posted something about "parfaiting" tobacco in your pipe. Several layers of different tobacco. Never heard of that..Dumb Hillbilly, but been itching to try it. Most Grabows (except for the #42 and #39) don't lend themselves to "parfaiting, but this Karl Erik does.

In the bottom, as a filter and flavoring, Black Cavendish. Next up PA then CH, and topped with Sugar Barrell/Black 1/2-1/2. Absolutely wonderful. Even after all these years of cigarettes, pipes, dip, and chew, the differences are remarkable.

My way of saying, try some combination.....ted

Tried it again in a Starfire #42. PA in the bottom, then CH, then C&D Bayou Morning Flake. The Flake didn't ignite the CH and so had to pick, tamp and relight. Still a wonderful experience.

Why hasen't a "dumb hillbilly" tried this before?..ted

I have tried it before, isn't it funny that when you "parfait" the tobacco's it's a better smoke than when they were all blended together, then smoked? If you have some McClelland 5100, try throwing that in, it's great.

PA in an Eldorado 81.

Happy someone else noted this too. I can't explain it, but it is different from blending tobaccos.

Oh hell.  Something else that sounds so good I have to try it!  Don't worry Ted, this city slicker never thought of it either.

Good to see a you around Dr.B!
I used to do this all the time with McClelland 5100 and Lane BCA. Some of the best smokes I've ever had, until I mixed the two-it was just not the same. Ted got me thinking again about it the other day, when he mentioned ordering that B-20. I need to get some of that and more 5100 and try a parfait, maybe even some PA in there too. I noticed this works best for me like how ted does...a plainer base tobacco, OTC or whatever, and an aromatic or cavendish. I smoke PA mainly, but hey then again I've been married 16 years and still am not bored with my wife, so one tobacco most times is ok for me.  You would understand if you saw her, whenever I show someone a photo of us together it looks like a kidnapping!

I still have to try that Butternut Burley you mentioned awhile back. By the way the Custombilt I got from you is a phenomenal smoker! The Golden Duke is a beauty and smokes great as well.

Legend, I'm out of Butternut Burley or I'd send you a sample.  It is a nice smoke, too sweet for me but perfect mixed with PA!  Glad you like that Custom Bilt.  I've got 3 at the moment - each one with a flaw that makes them unsuitable for sale on e-bay but still smoke great.

Are those 3 Custombilts in your rotation? I'll probably order up some Butternut Burley here in a week or so.
