A couple of years ago, I sent an Eldorado 49S bowl to Sparta for a new stem.  At the time, I didn't pay much attention to the type of stems that went with particular Dr. G models.  I didn't know that the 49S was supposed to have a saddle stem, and I didn't request one.  I simply asked them to install a new stem.  The pipe was returned to me with a well fit tapered stem.  A beautiful pipe.  I don't think I have ever smoked it since then.  I was recently going over my collection, and I realized (with the help of shape charts posted by members of DGCF) that this pipe should have a saddle stem.  I'm now wondering if they gave me the tapered stem because they no longer have saddle stems, or if they always use a tapered stem unless you request a saddle stem.  Can anyone enlighten me about this?

The pipe looks beautiful as it is, but I wouldn't mind paying for a saddle stem, if they have them.  I'd like the pipe to be as close to original as possible.

Yep, Sparta still has Saddle stems that are ABS plastic.
If only the bowl of a 45, 49, or any billiard is returned the factory guesses which stem to use. Sometimes they guess wrong.

I even took a #42 bowl to the factory and didn't request the saddle bit... I got a tapered stem. It still looks good and smokes good.
Get a saddle stem and you'll have interchangeable stems.. td

Thanks Tom!  I've always been satisfied with their service. In the future, I'll make sure I specify tapered or saddle when I send them a pot or billiard.
