I just purchased this pipe today at an antique store for $10.

Aside from needing a light polishing and a basic interior cleaning, it was in fantastic shape. It feels like a high quality briar and I am really looking forward to smoking it for the first time. I've never had or seen a Dr. Grabow pipe before.

I'm also really into buying old pipes and researching their histories

I've learned from reading here that the Westbrook was made from 1955 to 1985 (roughly) and that there are MANY different shapes and finishes on the Westbrook pipes.

Is this a 50 shape? Or is it a 36? Or is it one of the Collegiate pipes (95)? I think it's a straight billiard, but i'm not 100% sure.

Is there anything else you guys can tell me about this pipe? When was it probably made? Where? How?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hello!  What is the height of the bowl, and the diameter across the rim edge to edge? It's a straight billiard, and I'm thinking its a 36.

Smoke it like you stole it, because it $10, you did!

It looks like a 36 billiard to me, made at the Sparta, N.C. factory. It was a "coupon" pipe offered as a premium for sending in coupons included in some brands of pipe tobacco along with a pittance of money. They were made in the finish you have and also a smooth version. I can't reliably say when, other than within the production dates you listed. They made a large number of them and they are very well liked both among smokers and collectors in their variations. Not rare, but an excellent pipe.

The height of the bowl is 1 and 5/8 inch from the rim to the table.

The rim is just over 1 inch (1 and 1/16th) from outer edge to outer edge.

And I will! I knew it was a good buy as soon as I picked it up. It feels great in hand.

I noticed your container of Douwe Egberts Amphora tobacco. Did you know Dr. Grabow made pipes marked with the Douwe Egberts logo? This collecting thing can become addictive! Laughing

Based on measurements, confirmed as a 36.

You're telling me. Three months ago I had two pipes and was in the market for a 3 pipe rack.

Now I have 5 and i'm eyeing up 12-racks. Laughing
