Ted asked me to post these pictures. The pipe was made by a member(who is AWOL-and needs to come home !!) of this forum- Sir Duke.
A crack had developed in the shank and Ted asked me to repair it. Hopefully my repair will hold up and Ted will get many years of use from this fine pipe.

This is a good sized pipe, nice thick walls, good feel in the hand. I should have tried it out (Ted would not have known!) but didn't.
The fill didn't come out as smooth as I'd like. Filler is fast drying and I was trying to mix some briar sanding dust with it to lighten the color. The pipe had developed a few dings and scratches from use so I did some sanding and stained it Golden Brown Oak. Hope he likes the color !!

Don't know what to say, that I haven't already said. Can't wait to get it. Thank You ED....
Tom Martin was the original "Sir Duke" and an artist and woodworker. We became great friends, but he went in a different direction. We all do. The pipe is more than special to me..expertly done straight grain....As I told OS, bet Tom was "pist" when he found a flaw at the shank.
Now, Thanks to Ed, that's its fixed..........Many years of pleasure forthcoming.....Thank you Tom Martin, and Thank You Ed ..............ted

Fabulous job on an already great work of art from Tom Martin! When I last see that pipe at TED's, it looked pretty pale and sick. The fill ain't that bad and certainly is better than a big crack, especially if it makes the pipe serviceable again and keeps the crack from running.
My lustification, which I thought I had under control, has my eye twitching a bit as I think of the mesquite wood pipe TM was going to make me and didn't get to happen . . . --RJ-- |
