Does tobacco go bad/stale if unsealed like this? Or, does it age to a better taste/flavor?
Did CH team up with Dr. Grabow? If so, how long and I wonder what brought it about. I just think this is an interesting bit of history I had no idea about.

If it is unsealed, yes it will dry out, and sometimes to the point where it cannot be broght back to a (pleasurable) smokeable state. But those CH Luxury pouches did a good job of retaining the freshness of the tobacco. I simply love stumbling upon old stock pouches in out of the way country stores.
As far as aging...most tobaccos get better with age. The flavors tend to meld with one another. It all depends on the blend. Most everything I smoke is better with some age on it. That's why you'll see a lot of folks on the many different pipe and tobacco fourums talk about 'cellaring' there blends. When they find something that they think will become a regular, they'll buy a bunch and put it away...sometimes for years, kind of like wine.

Rev, I believe the RJR coupons for DG pipes ceased about 1974. If that pouch is original with the box, that makes the CH at least 35 years old.
If you smoke it and like it, don't expect you will find much more CH with that vintage. |

That's hit or miss, in my opinion. I trust the cans more than the fresh sealed packs. That one looks like it might have maintained it's vacuum seal at least.

I'd like to know more myself. RJR did for sure. TED knows the subject well and has spoken a bit on it elsewhere on the Forum. It takes searching the Forum a bit to pull together some of those earlier discussions as it could have come up in just about any subject!
The following mentions CH as a "new" aromatic. Not sure of the date, but I think I have it tentatively dated as around 1961. Maybe someone knows if CH has been around longer than that:

I think special offers of some sort went at least until 1981, as I have a chart, postmarked box and pipe that came from that year. Can't say about later, as I haven't gotten all the data I've collected organized. --RJ-- |

I tell you, I love how things were back in the "good ole days." These coupons for pipes are so cool. Thanks for putting that up RJ.
That sealed pouch is on eBay. Based on what's been said I think I'll wait to try currect CH. I'd like to get a true tasting for my first try.

Yeah, it would be nice to see some Dr. Grabows offered that way in this day and age, even if it was just UPC seals from store bought Dr. Grabows (a ceratin number) plus some dollars to buy a SPECIAL Dr. Grabow by mail order.
That's what I would recommend. A new pouch from a tobacco shop or Internet dealer. Hopefully it'll be fairly fresh. I did see that listing on eBay, of which the actual coupon is of the most interest, at least to me. Won't be bidding on it though.
And speaking of Carter Hall, just finished a bowl in an older Dr. Grabow #49 shape FILTER DELUXE, complete with the original filter that was made for them (they are different from the current filters (normally I just use a piece of UNSCENTED tissue or paper towel for a one smoke filter medium and it works fantastic). A nice nostalgic smoke . . . --RJ--
Below some order forms (c1963 on left, c1969 on right) to order a pipe and another insert that came from a pocket tin of Prince Albert (and one of the few things that "expired" within a certain amount of time, although no date given and I don't know if dated sales slip was required). Notice the circa 1969 form mentions that the Belvedere has been discontinued:

It took me a while, and I still don't know if I found everything that was discussed relevant to this, but in another post early on, this is what TED had to say:

At one point, and I don't know if it was in this Forum or in a personal letter, I thought TED said they were still redeeming those coupons until the early 1990's because they didn't have any expiration on them.
